A Conversation with Common

A Conversation with Common

It
was an honor to be apart of history! In the mist of making sure all of my students received books and conversation, I’m always mistaken to be younger than I look. Everyone thinks I’m the student until I provide knowledge of whom I am and what I do at the university.

Majority of the time I’m a silent knight making a lot of noise without saying a word, as displayed in this video.

I had an exchange with Common prior to the video, without the individuals to stop me from completing what we previously discussed!

It’s amazing to me when people attempt to stop something that God already had her hands on!

NEVER LET ANYTHING STOP YOU, NOT EVEN YOU!

Hip hop artist and actor Common made a stop at Prairie View A&M University this week as part of his book tour for his new memoir, "Let Love Have the Last Word." The event drew a full crowd of students and faculty eager to hear Common speak about his life and experiences.

Common took the stage for an intimate and insightful Q&A session. He spoke openly about his upbringing on the south side of Chicago, pursuing his musical dreams, and the lessons he's learned about love and relationships over his career.

A particularly poignant moment was when Common described the inspiration behind writing his memoir. He shared stories of past heartbreaks and regrettable mistakes, but how ultimately he chose love and forgiveness instead of anger. This message clearly resonated with the young audience members.

The second half of the event featured a reading from Common's memoir. Attendees were captivated as he gave a dramatic performance of a chapter detailing a painful breakup. Despite the heavy subject matter, Common brought humor and passion to the reading.

After closing the memoir, Common took more questions from the eager crowd. Topics ranged from discussing creativity and art to activism and working with iconic musicians like Kanye West. Throughout this interactive portion, Common emphasized the importance of telling your story authentically and the power writers and artists have to promote change.

To close out an incredible night, Common treated the audience to an impromptu live performance of his hit song "Glory" from the movie Selma. The entire auditorium sang and cheered along, leading to a thundering standing ovation. It was a special concert moment the crowd won't soon forget.

Common's talk provided inspiration, encouragement, and sound advice for the young students and faculty. His authenticity, positivity, and creative spirit were felt by all in attendance. Though just one stop on his nationwide tour, Prairie View A&M University will certainly be celebrating and discussing this uplifting visit from the hip hop icon for a long time.
